Lynchburg, VA — At a recent Liberty University rally, controversial Christian evangelical son of Jerry Falwell announced to a crowd of more than 18,000 students that it was their “duty” to watch gay pornography to, in his words, “keep ours eyes out for deviants.”
“I can’t stress how important it is for you to be courageous in a world that is increasingly un-Christ-like,” said Mr. Falwell in front of the audience of undergraduate Liberty University students. “Which is why I go undercover daily to learn about the deviancy in this world. And if that means looking at things seeing things that require the Lord’s forgiveness, then so be it. How can we know what struggles we face unless we learn about it first hand?”
The statement drew both gasps and cheers from the doe-eyed students, many of whom seemed confused by Falwell’s comments.
“Is he asking us to watch adult films?” Question 20-year-old sophomore Janie Alums. “I’m really confused and I’m not sure this is supported in scripture. But I’m sure the Mooslims[sic] and the Catholics like this.”
His curious embrace of gay pornography baffled supporters and critics alike. Over the past few years, he’s made what many consider to be bigoted and inflammatory statements about the LGBTQ communities.
Falwell recently insisted that Liberty University would stop participating in programs where the federal government barred them from discriminating against homosexuality say, “we’re now in a financial position that would allow us to simply exit the program. If it became necessary, that’s what we would do.”
Even More Controversies
He also co-wrote a letter threatening CPAC (the Conservative Political Action Conference) unless they canceled a sponsorship from conservative LGBTQ group GOProud.
Perhaps most controversially, Falwell and fellow Christian conservative Pat Robertson suggested that homosexuals, abortion-rights supporters and liberal civil-rights activists were partly to blame for the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks that toppled the World Trade Center and destroyed part of the Pentagon, killing thousands.
“I for one support Reverend Falwell’s call for us to embrace deviancy,” said Liberty senior econ major Daniel Adams. “I’ve kept my eye on gay porn for years just for this reason and I’m glad I have his blessing on my tactics.”
According to Liberty University information technology administrators, Mr. Falwell has instructed them to unblock such content from the campus networks. However he also ordered that Student IT Services track all such activity. They must also provide a quarterly report on viewing habits “for the good of a more Jesus-like culture.”
