Area Man Pays with a Check

Doob at SPDNevada City, CA — Local SPD cashier Megan Albright was temporarily confused on Thursday when grocery store patron and longtime Nevada City resident Toby “Doob” Carnevale attempted to use a check to purchase a single Mentos candy.

“Doobie has been coming in here a long time,” said Ms. Albright after her shift, ” and he’s always been a little–let’s say–eccentric. But he’s a fixture of the store and the 7 Hills area. At first I thought he was joking when he tried to buy one mint and then pay with a check, but apparently, he was serious.”

According to sources close to Mr. Carnevale, he hasn’t had a job in a few years and no one is quite sure how he gets by.

“Doob is really a nice guy,” said Shep “The Ship” Walkins of North San Juan. “But for the life of me, I have no idea where he gets is money. His sister is a Bay Area lawyer.  She bought him his Prius a few years back. Anyhow, Doob is quite possibly the laziest man in Nevada County, which would place him high in the runnin’ for laziest worldwide. But he abides.”

“Oh, I get by,” said Mr. Carnevale in a The Fazzler interview. “All I need is my bumper stickers. And Mentos. I love those things. Mind if I do a J?”

As for his run-in at SPD, Ms. Albright was cheery.

“He must have been having an off day,” continued Ms. Albright. “It’s the first time in my life I’ve seen a check for 3 cents. Probably the last time too. But Doobie is always welcome here.”
